California law requires all drivers to carry minimum auto insurance coverage. But what exactly does “minimum coverage” mean, and is it enough for you?
California’s Minimum Requirements
The state mandates the following minimum liability coverage (often referred to as 30/60/15):
- $30,000 for injury/death to one person
- $60,000 for injury/death to more than one person
- $15,000 for damage to property
Why Minimum May Not Be Enough
While the new minimum coverage meets legal requirements, it still may not fully protect you financially. Consider these scenarios:
Medical Costs
A serious accident can quickly exceed the $30,000 per person limit. If you’re at fault and the injured party’s medical bills total $75,000, your policy would only cover $30,000, leaving you responsible for the remaining $45,000 out of pocket.
Multiple Injuries
If more than one person is injured, the total coverage caps at $60,000 per accident. In a situation involving multiple people, those costs can add up fast, potentially leaving you responsible for expenses beyond your policy limits.
Property Damage
With a $15,000 property damage limit, you may not be fully covered in today’s market. The average vehicle now costs well over $30,000-$40,000. If you total someone’s car or damage multiple vehicles or property, you could be responsible for the difference.
Recommended Coverage Levels
We recommend considering higher liability limits:
- 100/300/100 for stronger financial protection
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage to protect against drivers with little or no insurance
- Comprehensive and Collision to cover your own vehicle
How Much Does Extra Coverage Cost?
Upgrading from minimum coverage to recommended limits often costs less than you might expect, sometimes as little as $20-40 more per month for significantly better protection.
